T-H-U-P-P-P-P-P-P-P! by Baron-Von-Jello T-H-U-P-P-P-P-P-P-P! by Baron-Von-Jello
Late at night after you've turned out the lights and snuggled into bed, you feel the strange sensation of something watching you. You look over to see a small ghost silently floating above your dresser peering at you through dark black holes where it's eyes used to be.

This illustration scared the living crap out of me for YEARS. I mean all the illustrations are absolutely horrifying, but something about this one really filled me with dread as a child. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, I'm referring to the old Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books! These were short stories from folklore and history written by Alvin Schwartz, but people mostly remember them for their terrifying illustrations done by the impeccable Stephen Gammell.

Mr. Gammell has always been and continues to be a huge source of inspiration for me and this was an absolute labor of love trying to faithfully recreate one of his illustrations in 3D.

He's a full model! The ghost and everything on the dresser are full sculpts, but the background is just 2 planes with a texture.

I think it would be funny to put it in as an easter egg or something, somewhere.

the clocks a little too small for it I think :XD:

I was thinking comic-wise, like when somebodies looking at or traveling some bizzaro otherworld, the ghost would randomly show up in the background, maybe just doing something silly or being in the strangest places, like poking its head out of an apple basket, you know just as a funny way of making a cameo.

Ohhh so you mean with HIM! I thought you meant hide something in this drawing haha. Yea thats a funny idea, I'll consider it! Like you said, maybe for a shot with a lot of characters in it I can hide him in the background somewhere.

Your welcome, but the funny part about this story is when the ghost blew a raspberry!

The ones that got me were:

How that dead man danced.

The Thing

The eyeless woman...the one with the silver dollars story.

The one story where the girl had to put the knife in the ground and caught her dress in it.

I LOVE those books.

Oh man that knife-in-the-ground one was especially creepy. Toss in the lady from "the dream" and the spider-face lady too.

Perfect!! I would not have thought that his illustration style would work in 3D, but you nailed it.

Only about two weeks ago I was thinking about how I would try to do an homage to Gammell's work from those Scary Story books, but couldn't think of a good idea, so I let it go. You have definitely succeeded where I could not.

You should have! I would have loved to see it.

Maybe for next Halloween we could try and organize a bunch of artists to re-create some of their favorite works of his.

Oi! I just remembered our conversation about this from last year, and it is getting near that time of year.

We should definitely try to get some more people together to recreate some of their favorite Scary Stories illustrations. I am just getting started on mine.

Yeah man! I am almost done with the one I was working on, and then I was going to do a journal article about it, and link back to the one you did last year. That would be fun if a few others jumped on the bandwagon too!

That is a fantastic idea! We'll have to send each other reminders when the season rolls around again.

It seems like an especially fitting project because they re-released the books for the 30th anniversary with completely different (really tame) illustrations a couple of years ago. The illustrations look alright by their own rights, but what really made those old Scary Stories books great and successful was the Gammell illustrations. Shameful!

Oh man I heard about that. It was Brett Helquist, the same guy who illustrated the Series of Unfortunate events books. Yea they're ok in their own right, but they pale in comparison to the Gammell drawings from the 80's and 90's.

Yeah. To be honest, I think that Helquist is technically talented, but I'm not a huge fan of his illustrations. There is something about his style that is a bit too contrived(?) for me. I'm not sure what it is.

I guess they stopped publishing the older versions too. I went to buy them on Amazon but could only find them used. I'd better get my copies quick before they cost a fortune.
